HP computer: HP introduces Compaq AirLife 100

HP introduced a new netbook that allows users to use online resources in a novel way when they need to access and use web sites, e-mail, social networks, instant messaging, photos, music and more.

The Compaq AirLife 100 includes a 10.1-inch bright screen, Android operating system (full multitasking support), and a customized touch interface.

Definitely, HP is taking advantage of its legacy and innovation in the touch technology. This way, the customized touch interface offers a new touch navigation experience, an easy system to make zoom in and out on web pages in the browser and a set of additional touch resources and shortcuts menu.

This new netbook also reinforces the strategic agreement signed on November 2009 between HP and the European telecommunications company Telefonica to define a partnership that provides mobile broadband services to markets located in Europe and Latin America. According to the companies, HP and Telefonica have created this association in order to offer an unsurpassable online experience for customers.

Playstation portable games: Sony to create a smartphone with PSP gaming capabilities

There is an interesting nonofficial announcement coming from Japan: Several journalist have made public that Sony is planning to develop a smartphone where users will be able to play PSP games. In addition, apparently, Sony would be creating a device with a wide range of features, so it would not be easy to define it as a netbook, or an e-reader, or a handheld console (like PSP); actually, it would be a combination of all of them.

These projects are the reaction of Sony to Apple strategies, particularly regarding the iPad and iPhone. So, this is an interesting competition that, hopefully, will benefit the end users. But, at the same time, it could be interpreted as an obvious and meaningful evolution of the PSP, a console that has had strong competitors since it was launched commercially.

As you can imagine, the new smartphone that would be able to play PSP games won’t include slots to insert game cartridges. Instead, they could be connected to the online shop “PlayStation Store” (which is currently accessible by using a PlayStation 3 or PSP console) to download games developed for PSP. Sony Ericsson is working on this smartphone and, most likely, it will impact the mobile market in a strong way. However, it is not clear yet whether the whole PSP catalog will be supported, or only a reduced number of games. Apparently, the original games developed by Sony will be totally supported, but maybe third-party games could have some limitations, at least initially.

For the moment, the only thing we can do is to wait for official announcements and watch for the way how these projects move forward, since Sony is constantly surprising us with innovations and unexpected products. After the launch of the PSPGo, which has had very little success, the company needs a new product with a “wow” factor: That would be an opportunity to recover fans and increase earnings.

Mini computer Sony Vaio M: It will be launched at the end of March in Europe

The new Sony Vaio M will hit the European stores at the end of March. That is a new medium-end netbook whose price has not been revealed yet; however, we think that, as usual with the Vaio lines, the price will be higher than the average prices of other netbooks. The launch was confirmed by some British representatives of the company Sony. The Sony Vaio M will be introduced as a computer with a 10.1-inch screen and a battery that will be able to provide energy during about 8 hours before needing a recharge.

Screen will be LED-illuminated (of course!) and, although at this time we don’t know what resolutions it will support, judging by the size of the monitor, it is very possible that the default resolution will be 1024 x 600 pixels. Once again, a Pine Trail chip will be the heart of the processor for this new netbook. Specifically, we are talking about the Intel Atom N450 at 1.66GHz.

As you can imagine, the operating system of the Sony Vaio M will be Windows 7. The storage capacity is defined by the 2.5-inch hard drive that will be installed by default inside the Sony Vaio M; that is to say: 250GB. In addition, those netbooks will have a single RAM module (pre-installed) with a capacity of 1GB (at least it will be the standard feature for the basic version).

Regarding connectors, there is no surprises; just the regular things of a normal computer. This new Sony Vaio M will come with Bluetooth support (a “must-have” feature nowadays), three USB 2.0 ports, and network card compatible with Wi-Fi systems.

My wife and I take hundreds of pictures of our daughter. If you are like us then those pictures are safely squirreled away on our computer. Some pictures you take to look at in the future. Some pictures you take just to record something. But, having those hundreds of pictures digitized on your computer is rather useless. That is unless you put them on a CD and take them to the local photo shop and make prints of them.

Printing pictures at the local photo shop can be really expensive. But, if you print your pictures at home with your home printer, you run the risk that the prints may not be as nice as you would like. Now you could buy an expensive printer design to print photos. These printers can cost from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Not to mention the cost of the special ink and the special paper. If you print pictures, then the cost of ink and paper could run you several hundred dollars a year.

Once you have made the investment into a great photo ready printer and the necessary ink and paper that does not mean that the pictures will always come out nice. Moreover, printed pictures tend to fade over time and can be easily damaged from handling. The older those pictures get the easier it is to damage them. Until, eventually you will have to put them away for safe keeping. At that point those pictures you made such big investment in become nearly useless out of site not seen by anyone.

For now let’s not look at the fact that pictures fade and are fragile. What about when you want to change the pictures that decorate the walls in your house. I don’t know about you but my grand parents filled the walls of the hallways and staircases in their house with pictures of family, friends, and events throughout their life. There were probably hundreds of pictures along these walls. Could you imagine trying to changes these pictures out on the spur of the moment; or on a seasonal basis? That would be a huge task.

Mobo gets rebadge happy with two new low-cost subnotes for Brazil

It looks like folks in Brazil are soon going to have a few more low-cost subnote options to consider, with Mobo announcing two new but curiously familiar-looking models. That includes the Positivo Mobo (pictured above), which appears to almost certainly be a rebadge of Airis' Kira 740 Eee PC lookalike (or a rebadge of whatever that is a rebadge of). That likelihood is further backed up by the nearly identical specs, including the usual 7-inch display, Via C7-M processor, 1.3-megapixel webcam, and built-in WiFi, although this particular model appears to come with 2GB of flash memory in place of the Kira's standard 40GB hard drive. Set to be released alongside it is the company's Mobo Kids laptop, which is just a straight up rebadge of Intel's Netbook platform (a.k.a. Classmate 2), with it boasting the same Celeron M processor and presumably all the same specs seen in other incarnations like CTL's 2go PC. Look for both of 'em to pack the same R$999 price tag (or $590), with the Positivo Mobo hitting stores first on May 23rd and the Mobo Kids following sometime in July.

Microsoft to bring Sync to other carmakers as Microsoft Auto in November

Our experiences with Microsoft's Sync in Ford cars has been mostly a comedy of voice-recognition errors (we'll never forget our rental at CES blasting NWA in response to "Play artist: David Bowie"), but it looks like other automakers will be able to join in the confusing fun in November, when Microsoft's exclusive contract with Ford runs out. Hyundai and Kia are the first to sign up for what's now being branded Microsoft Auto, and while it's not exactly clear what their versions of the system will look like, you can expect the same basic features as Sync, as well as some new capabilities like navigation and emergency-response services. Microsoft also says that Auto will be available for "general release to the automotive community," which could lead to the inclusion of the OS on aftermarket gear as well. Let's just hope they tune the system to figure out the difference between Ziggy Stardust and Eazy-E, eh?

Microsoft and NBC working on copyright filters for Zune?

Microsoft's recently refurbished Zune store features a lot of NBC content like Heroes and The Office, but it looks like it may have come at what could be a steep price: NBC recently told the New York Times that it's working with Microsoft to develop "copyright filters" for the Zune that would "remove pirated movies and videos." (We'll pause for a moment so you can gape appropriately.) Granted, it's not clear whether NBC wants to actually delete non-DRM'd media or simply block playback, but apparently the network thinks it's an issue on par with variable pricing, and it's not in the iTunes Store because Apple refuses to cooperate. Microsoft, on the other hand, is apparently cheerfully working on such a solution, dubbed the "copyright cop," and says that it's sympathetic to NBC's concerns because it also suffers from piracy issues. Sigh. Of course, none of this is new territory for NBC or Microsoft: the two companies are working in similar content filtering systems to be implemented at the ISP level with AT&T, and NBC and SanDisk are working on a filter for Sansa players as well. Still, if Microsoft is serious about competing with the iPod, signing up for consumer-hostile DRM systems that actually block playback and potentially delete files just isn't the way to do it -- let's hope this one dies on the vine.

Update: Although a spokesperson told the NYT that Microsoft was working with NBC on anti-piracy efforts, the company is now saying that it has no plans to implement a "copyright cop" in the Zune, and the Zune Insider blog confirms. Great, now just cancel the ISP-level filtering system and we'll be all set.

Wearing CDMA guts underneath its F700 clothing, the fashion-friendly QWERTY slider offers a 2 megapixel cam with flash and autofocus, GPS, the full range of Bluetooth profiles, microSD slot, and a true HTML browser. Unlike its crosstown competition -- the LG Voyager -- the Glyde doesn't offer support for Verizon's VCAST TV service, but we imagine most folks will consider that a minor (read: nonexistent) inconvenience. Sony XEL-1 estimated to last customers only half as long as expected

Ruh roh. Research firm DisplaySearch has just unleashed a new report that takes an in-depth look at the ultrathin XEL-1, and it ended up finding a video lifetime barely half of what Sony promises. Apparently the company ran a couple of Sony's OLED TVs for 1,000 hours, after which it found that blue luminance degraded by 12-percent, the red by 7-percent and the green by 8-percent. Extrapolating the data it gathered, it estimated that the unit would lose half of its brightness in 17,000 hours -- Sony says you can expect 30,000. Of course, Sony is still standing by its numbers, and even we can see that DisplaySearch's methods aren't perfectly scientific, but if you were honestly expecting to watch this thing for the next decade (and not a year less), you may want to hit the read link and snoop around.

A few weeks ago we were invited to Panasonic’s imaging event in London to test the latest cameras and camcorders Panasonic has to offer. Today we attended the event at the perfect venue to test cameras, the Dali universe (which is next to the London eye, houses of parliament, near tower bridge etc). So there was plenty to snap away at.

I reviewed the Panasonic HDC-SD9 camcorder and today I am going to show you some of the stills that were taken whilst speeding along on a boat - this was the perfect test for the Panasonic’s OIS camera system which automatically reduces shakes caused by a wobbly hand! First of all I would like to tell you some facts and my thoughts on this camcorder.
The Panasonic HDC-SD9 the smallest and lightest full High Definition camcorder in the world. It records in 1920×1080 at 25P. In layman’s terms that means it records in the same true to life format as you would see on Emerdale or Eastender’s compared to the standard movie format of 24P.

Another neat feature is the face detection and intelligent shooting guide which makes filming as simple as pie. Here is some blurb from the Panasonic site that explains what technologies the camera offers “It also offers Panasonic’s original 3CCD camera system, Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), and a Leica Dicomar lens – three technologies that team up to deliver full-HD images of exquisite beauty. Viewed on today’s high-quality large-screen TVs, video clips shot with the HDC-SD9 are simply breathtaking”. This means you can record professional looking movies in full HD at the click of a button.

Another feature that I like is the fact that the HDC-SD9 uses dual memory of a SD card and an internal 60 GB hard-drive. This means you can easily upgrade the memory in the future and you also gain all the benefits of having SD memory (easy to share, easy to transfer and more versatile when you come to print and SD cards are now cheap as chips).

As I mentioned earlier I took quite a few still pictures with the camcorder. The reason for this was that I believe this type of camcorder is a great replacement for a standard digital camera. The photos were sharp and as clear as the video, this is a great point and click camera as well as a camcorder. One nice feature (which has become standard on most camcorders now) is that the HDC-SD9 has a dedicated photo button at the top back of the camera, this can be quickly used between filming without having to change filming modes. All you have to do is pause filming and take the photo - it’s so simple but extremely effective.

The camera records in 5.1 channel sound and one thing I noticed from the dismantled demo they had on show was it also has five microphones. This sound quality is great and when matched to the picture quality makes a really decent film on the simplist point and click settings.

In summary I feel this is a great little camcorder with some outstanding features, I love the compact size and ease of use and the HD film it delivers is amazing.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10 is the second digital SLR camera that Panasonic has manufactured and this second model is packed full of easy to use features that help take stunning photographs.

The L10 is a modern looking digital SLR compared to it’s predecessor which was modelled a traditional SLR camera. The result is a better looking camera which is easier to use and handle as the size and ergonomics are not overbearing like some other cameras on the market. Panasonic have also included some new features which I like. This includes the new 2.5 inch flip out screen which rotates so you can use it like a normal digital camera or to take self portraits. The LCD screen has an auto focus system which adapts when you alter the zoom and focus with perfect accuracy. When you flip the screen back in the optical view finder comes back into use - it is very simple but also very clever.

The 10.1 mega pixel L10 has also benefited from some of the new features from their new LZ camera range. This includes automatic facial recognition and mega O.I.S image stabilizing which can easily be switched on with a button on the side of the lens. The O.I.S has three settings depending on what you are shooting at the time, we found that the system worked well to reduce shake and to test to the max we took pictures on board a high speed rib on the River Thames.
The L10 is very easy to use and is aimed at users new to digital SLR cameras. The selection dial on the top of the camera is a nice touch and includes five programs that can easily be selected depending on what you are photographing at the time. Panasonic have also included the new Intelligent Auto technology (IA) on this camera which makes point and click photography possible for the first time with digital SLR’s.

The intelligent auto feature automatically removes red eye, handles scene selection modes, adjusts light configurations, reduces colour bleed and noise reduction - the results are amazing and show that Panasonic have developed their IA technology a great deal since their last model.

To demonstrate the new technology we took some pictures with the L10 in London, some were taken on the River Thames and some were taken on land.

Iphone Missing – Presumed Sold Out Ready For 3G Version

The Apple iPhone has been something of a phenomenon since its release. There’s no doubting its incredible looks and the existence of a touch screen that actually works as intended had many a technophile salivating at the very prospect of ownership.

However, the £269 price tag was far from accessible for the majority. Partially in light of this, prices were reduced by £100 to a much more attractive £169. The end result is that both the providers Carphone Warehouse and the network O2 have indicated that they only have very limited supplies of the iPhone left in stock.

A more cynical, although potentially more accurate, view is that the price drop was offered in order to clear stocks in time for the release of the 3G iPhone in early June. Citi Analysts have taken the price drop, along with other factors, as a clear indication that Steve Jobs will announce the next generation of 3G iPhone (as well as a new iPod) during his keynote speech. The speech will take place during the Apple Worldwide Developer’s Conference on June 9th.

The Developer’s Conference has been something of a hot bed for new releases in recent years and if a 3G version of the iPhone is imminent then Steve Job’s keynote speech is the most likely time to make an announcement.

At least, your mobile phone might join in. It will if it’s a Nokia 5320 XpressMusic. One of the latest Nokia handsets, this includes the Nokia Say and Play software. The rather intuitively titled program enables you to pick a song just by speaking the title. It could make for some fairly embarassing situations involving bad music tastes – although it may not, of course.

All in all it’s a pretty nifty piece of kit for music lovers on the go. Quick downloading of tunes is enabled through HSDPA and USB 2.0. Up to 8GB external memory is offered through the microSD card slot.

Nokia has also announced that its “Comes with Music” phones will include 12 months access to their as yet undefined music download service. Its perhaps a little odd that the 5320, and similar 5220, don’t include access to this service but perhaps something bigger and better is planned to coincide with that announcement.

For those who don’t know – the Comes with Music product was announced in December last year. At the time of the press release, the service was being billed for a mid 2008 release and would include millions of tracks. Consumers could download an unlimited number of songs that they would be able to keep even once their subscription came to an end. Could be promising, and we will try to dig up a little more dirt on the service and its expected release details but we can tell you that Universal Music Group International and Sony BMG are already lined up for the release of the service.

OK, first things first – I’m a complete nerd and an unashamed geek when it comes to home networking. It’s truly one of my big loves in life, although such is the way with home networking equipment that it can also pretty quickly become on of my biggest waking nightmares.

The fact is that you can pay a fortune for pretty much any gadget and then struggle endlessly to actually understand just what it’s supposed to do.

Then, at the other end of the spectrum, are the absolutely essential items that make your home network tick but are far less glamorous. Typically, this lack of glamour means we pay much less heed to their features and trimmings.

The wireless router is one such glaring example. A bad one will limit your download speed and make connecting any device more than 3 feet away a near impossibility.

We briefly got our hands on Sony's DSC-T300 digital camera (along with a bevy of other Cyber-shots) back at PMA earlier this year, but the folks at Digital Photography Review have now come through with a thorough review of the camera which, among other things, is particularly notable for its use of touchscreen controls. On that important point, they found the controls "generally pleasant to use," aided in no small part by the "largest possible screen for a camera of its size" (3.5 inches). They were also particularly impressed with the Cyber-shot's "small, smart design" and its impressive 5x optical zoom. It's not all good news, however, with the camera also boasting what Digial Photography Review describes as "terrible battery life," as well as "over-enthusiastic reds," and a noise-reduction feature that not only eliminates noise but reduces image quality no matter what the setting. Some pretty big trade offs, to be sure, but apparently not enough to keep it from getting an above average rating.

Harris Corp. may have nothing but good things to say about the HTC-made PDAs it's planning to supply for use in the 2010 census, but it looks like the handhelds are already starting to cause plenty of headaches for census officials, who are reportedly even considering a return to pencil and paper if things can't be resolved. As the AP reports, the problems start with the contract for the devices, which originally clocked in at $596 million, has since grown to $647 million, and could eventually balloon to as much as $2 billion. As if that wasn't enough, the handheld has also apparently proven to be "too complex" for some of the temporary census workers that took part in a test last year, and the device was reportedly "not initially programmed to transmit the large amounts of data necessary." As a result, census officials are now said to be considering a number of different options to scale back the use of the devices, only one of which apparently actually has the headcounters entering data into 'em as they go door-to-door.

Xbox will not adopt Blu-ray says Microsoft

The news is that Microsoft will not adopt Sony's Blu-ray high-definition technology into its Xbox 360 game console. Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, said in a recent interview that "owners can still view high-definition movies on the Xbox via Microsoft's Xbox Live online service that allows renting movies, and is the only game console to do so." Due to the exit of HD DVD, Microsoft stopped offering an HD DVD add-on player for its popular console. "We still think we have a great value, that we have significantly better value than Sony," Greenberg says, referring both to the price of the console and to the Xbox video offering. "Every month we've actually been in stock we've outsold them by a 2 to 1 margin". Recent supply shortages meant Sony's Blu-ray-equipped PlayStation 3, outsold the Xbox thus far in 2008. Greenberg promises a "very healthy inventory" by April.
